Winter-plumbingOne of common problem in Toronto Area is burst pipes. If water stagnates and freezes, it will expand and cause the pipes to burst.

Many of these pipes that burst are large municipal pipes, which are beyond your control (unless you are a municipal worker obviously), but a pipe can burst in your home or business. There are some precautions that you can take to hopefully prevent that from occurring.

Here are some easy tips to keep your pipes from bursting:

Run your faucets.

Do not allow your water to stagnate. Arbitrarily run unused faucets from time to time if temperatures are below freezing. If you lose heat, it is recommended to keep your faucets running at a slow drip to keep flow moving.

Disconnect hoses.

Any exterior spigots should be shut off with the hoses disconnected. Not only can frozen water rip and damage a hose, but it can freeze inside the spigot and cause the water inside the pipes to backup and possibly burst.

Insulate pipes.

Place pipe insulator over all your pipes, especially over any ones that reach outdoors. This will prevent the cold air from freezing any condensation and moisture that accumulates.

Be thorough.

There are many pipes in basements and crawl spaces that may go unnoticed when insulating. It is crucial to not miss any of these since they are likely in colder areas.

Be careful of frozen pipes.

If a pipe is covered in ice, it may not be wise to unthaw it. If there is a small crack in it, it will burst when the water unfreezes. In these cases, it is recommended to contact a professional plumber to deal with a frozen pipe.

Hopefully taking these precautions will help to prevent your pipes from bursting. If it does happen, it is good to know where the main water shut off is ahead of time. Locate the valve now so that if an emergency does occur, you will know to go right to the valve and shut it off. Saving those few extra minutes can mean a lot and greatly reduce the amount of water that is spilled, saving you from further cleanup and damages.
