If you own your Toronto home, then it is a pretty safe bet that at some point you are going to need plumbing repairs. After all, this one of your home’s main systems, and gets used hundreds (perhaps thousands) of times every year! If you have children, then that number increases thanks to laundry, showering, dishes and a plethora of water activities.
For most people, very little thought is given to the work a plumbing system does – until it is no longer working! Then, it is suddenly of glaring importance to find out how quickly the problem can be resolved, and hopefully, without a huge price tag. It is usually after the visit from the plumber that one finds out what could have been done to prevent that specific plumbing repair.
But you don’t have to wait until disaster strikes to address a problem. By taking proactive measures, you can keep plumbing repairs to a minimum and avoid large repair bills. Here are some things to keep in mind:
1. Address clogs in your sink promptly by using an old fashioned plunger. Rather reaching for the cell phone, grab a plunger and de-clog the drain. You may also wish to follow up with by pouring half a cup of baking soda followed by a cup of vinegar. The chemical reaction of these items will help clear the pipes. Between a plunger and the occasional baking soda and vinegar treatment, you can keep clogs at bay and lower the need for costly plumbing repairs.
2. If you have a garbage disposal then you know what a wonderful invention this is… until it doesn’t work properly. The next time yours quits working don’t stress. Rather, get an Allen key designed for disposals and unjam the blades. Be sure to turn the disposal off FIRST. Check for any utensils that may be lodge in the gears. Under the disposal look for a small hole, and work the Allen key into, be careful not to hinder the blades. Press the reset button located next to the hole under the disposal. Turn on the water and flip the switch.
3. Tub drains are most often clogged because of hair. To keep hair from being the culprit of an expensive plumbing repair, take time on a monthly basis to remove the drain cap and clean out any visible hair; then use a sink plunger several times. From time to time, use the soda and vinegar treatment, or you can also use one of the liquid plunger items available at big box stores. Another great way to clean out clogged drains is to boil a pot of water – some people recommend adding sea salt to the water at a 1 to 4 ratio- then pouring it down the drain. For extremely bad clogs that result in an excessively slow drain, you may wish to go ahead and call in a plumber to do the repair.
Plumbing repairs can be kept to a minimum by employing these, and other, measures for keeping plumbing lines free of debris that doesn’t belong. But when disaster strikes, don’t delay. Call a Toronto plumber you trust.
