We depend on our Toronto home’s water sewer system every day. From showering to cleaning dishes, doing laundry to washing the car, we are completely lost when unable to utilize this most necessary home system. But how often do you actually think about seeing that your water and sewer system have been maintained appropriately?
Like any other system in your home, this is a system that requires basic care, else you will find yourself paying someone else to repair or replace it – and that is not a scenario that most of us wish to find ourselves facing.
Water and sewer system maintenance is not nearly as difficult as one might imagine. It just means being proactive rather than reactive to how the system is used.
This means doing the following:
- Know how old your home is. The older your home more the likely it is that you have longer sewer lines, and that these lines have, at some point, been approached by tree roots which can cause severe damage – especially in the form of the root entering the water line. This will cause blockages, and eventually the bursting, of the pipes. It is recommended that you have a professional water and sewer company come out to inspect your lines and, if necessary, clean them using root cutting equipment at least one time a year. You may also wish to schedule an annual line cleaning (snaking) to be done to keep the pipes clean and obstruction free. You may also wish to talk to your county sanitation department to learn if they have a herbicidal foam treatment available that can be used to clean out the pipes.
- Remember that items such as plastics, diapers, sanitary pads, and even flushable wipes should never be flushed down your toilet(s) as these products can cause clogging, back-ups, and eventually breakage. Educate your family about the importance of disposing of items properly.
- Never pour grease of any kind down your drains. This will cause blockage and build up. If you are not sure of the status of your drains, use products design for clearing the drains to help. Once you have gotten the drains cleared/cleaned, you can help maintain them by pouring ½ a cup of baking soda down the drain followed by a cup of vinegar. This natural reaction will help breakdown any accumulation. It can also help the drain to smell better.
- Install drain traps in bathtubs and sinks to catch any hair that can cause build up. Then just empty the traps on a regular basis.
Water and sewer problems don’t have to be detrimental, if you take a few minutes each month or year to do these proactive steps. If you have additional questions, talk to a local water and sewer to learn what they suggest for your area. In St. Paul, Gene’s Water and Sewer is there to help. But whomever you call, just be sure to maintain this important home system – you really don’t want to deal with the consequences of ignoring it!
