Frozen waterMost Toronto homeowners will clean their home when the need arises, but are they cleaning and taking care of the right spots? Probably not, with our plumbing tips your home will be prepared for what the next season brings. Before the cold hits your home and your plumbing system, here are some things you can do to prevent any damage or issues from happening.

Plumbing tips for homeowners

When the leaves are done falling in your yard, be sure to clean all of the following places: gutters, downspouts, window wells, and yard drains. If you don’t clean these areas on time, you will have compacted leaves that hold water, bring in insects, and slow down the flow of water away from your home. Ultimately this will lead to plugging up your sewer and drain lines that can cause a potential basement flood in your home. Be wise to start cleaning as soon as you can.

Checking for leaks

This next season will bring in cold temperatures. Be sure to check the exterior water fixtures and look for leaks, you can have them repaired before you shut off the water for winter. This is safe practice and will save you time/money. Before the hard freeze starts, shut off all your water to any exterior water valves. If you don’t know where your shut off valve is located, check the inside of your home near the exterior valve. Normally it is located near the exterior valve, when you close the interior valve will shut off the water to the outside. After this is done, make sure to reopen the value to allow any remaining water to drain out. This practice should also be used for your sprinkler system, make sure to drain them out as well.

Preparing the outside

After cleaning all those drains, looking for leaks, and shutting off the exterior valves. Now it’s time to disconnect the hoses from the exterior water valves. If you do not do this, you may cause the water in the hose to freeze and damage the valves. In the worst case scenario, you can damage the interior piping of your home if you don’t disconnect these hoses. Place your hoses somewhere inside, like the garage, basement, or storage space. You can help prolong its life if properly kept safe.
